Website Design and SEO – Working Together

 

When it comes to website design and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) it seems that the two are on opposite ends of the spectrum from a usability standpoint as well as their objectives. Everyone wants a jazzed up, flash-enabled, super-duper ritzy website. The problem is, the more you lean towards design, the farther away you stray from SEO objectives – lightweight, fast loading, lots of keyword rich text, etc…

 

So, how do you balance the two? Can it be done effectively? Well it does involve some compromise but certainly both objectives can be met. But it is important that you do them in the correct order. Before spending thousands on an SEO campaign to achieve top rankings for your site, you want to first ensure that your site is designed in such a way as to make the SEO objectives easier to achieve. So it is highly recommended that you first start with the ideal design and then overlay that design with the SEO objectives and tune it down a bit. This strategy allows for the best overall solution.

 

There are many ways that you can still have a very robust design and be effective from an SEO standpoint. CSS (cascading style sheets) can be used to overlay text on images, for example, so that you can still have a visually striking page, but at the same time have lots of text on the page. This strategy can be used throughout the design of buttons, banners and graphics, for example as well.

 

In the end, what is most important is that you strike a balance between an artsy design and a purely functional high performing SEO site. Where you will end up along the spectrum of compromised between those two opposing objectives will ultimately depend upon your business objectives and priorities. But in today’s changing technology times, it is highly recommended that you strive to be as SEO optimized as possible. The competition is getting tougher every day, and you don’t want to be giving up ground to your competitors just so that you can have a “cool” looking site.
